You probably haven't heard this one before, in all my scholaring I've only heard it once a long time ago from an old fisher just before I went to sea.
Almost forgotten stories that tell of voyages into obscure seas, which also mention a humble shanty on a small, inhospitable island. It is said that on rare occasions an old man can be seen stepping out of the seemingly deserted dwelling to gaze out to sea at a passing ship, usually on the evening before a storm. The man has only been viewed from afar giving regards to the crew either by raising his hand presumably in greeting, or in some cases frantically waving his arms directing a ship to turn back.
Those whom have allegedly seen this man, believe he is able to ward of impending danger, as those whom have made this claim had also survived great disaster at sea.
Stories of this "clairvoyant" hermit have faded into obscurity. Those few who continue to make reference to this mysterious hermit also bare rumours of a seaman who is said to have met him in person; of course if you believe in such things, which I have no say in.
No one has ever found out where this hermit is, if he even exists , the ocean is an exceedingly large place, but the old fisher advised me: "If you do see him: heed his warnings, keep yourself and your mates safe and spare him the tremendous guilt.".
